If you’re a pet lover or an animal rescuer, you already know that pets are dying in shelters around the country every day. You’ve probably cringed at the word “euthanasia” but did you stop to find out exactly how many healthy and adoptable pets are being (as it’s so nicely worded) put to sleep or what was being done to help these pets?

Last Saturday our friends from Chihuahua Rescue of San Diego invited us to attend PETCO Escondido's Rescue Extravaganza. It was so much fun meeting the adoptable pets and especially meeting foster parents from so many different organizations and sharing their experience. Fostering truly holds a special and different meaning for every foster parent. We asked foster parents from our local rescues what fostering means to them, here's what they had to say!

A Day With Vanilla Ice

I had the pleasure of spending the day with Vanilla Ice at the Rock Church Pet Adoption event in July with Dog Lovers Ministry, Chula Vista Animal Care Facility and Passion for Pitties. No no, not the rapper. Vanilla Ice, the 3 year old Husky Akita mix looking for a home.

Vanilla Ice was high energy, with his tail going a mile a minute, running up and down wanting to play with everyone and everything. He would go from hopping up in the air to catch a whiff of whatever smell only he could seem to pick up to trying to crawl into my lap forgetting his size; needless to say only 1/3 of him could fit; we were fast friends.

“No more homeless pets.” It’s a mantra of animal advocates around the world. We want to do whatever we can to help every needy animal find a loving home where he or she will have a lifetime of happiness.

Fostering is a wonderful first step to helping those animals. When you foster, you become that animal’s #1 salesperson. It is your job to keep them safe, happy, and tell the world about them. One of the best ways to show the world exactly who they are is through great photos.

Two-Tone Tony's New Beginning

Tony was one of the first dogs that ever came to us looking for a foster home and one of our happiest success stories. Tony's family abandoned him at the shelter to be euthanized after being hit by a car - can you believe that?! Fortunately, the shelter staff loved him so much they raised the money needed to save his life!

We were eager to find him a foster home after all the trauma he'd been through and to make sure all the hard work of those who helped rescue him didn't go to waste. It really must have been destiny that we found the perfect foster mom, Mariko. She was the angel, the foster parent, who gave Tony a new life and a new beginning.

From the time I was 8 years old and was convinced I could “adopt” a stray cat and have him live in my
bedroom without my parents’ knowledge or permission, I have been an animal lover. As an adult, I
got my own furry little best friend 5 years ago and it was one of the greatest choices I have ever made.
My dog Barkley’s unbridled and unconditional love and affection, quirky personality and constant
companionship have brought me such happiness and joy. I often marvel at how little a dog asks for and

I first met my foster dog, Butter, at the ARWOB adoption event in Hillcrest. My boyfriend and I
decided to attend the adoption event because we are both die-hard dog lovers and wanted to help the
cause in any way that we could. Since we are both college students and do not have much money to
spend, we thought that fostering would be perfect for us; we would forever change the life of a dog,
and the rescue organization would cover all major costs.

At the event, once I laid eyes on Butter, I was instantly drawn. ... Read More

They say you never forget your first; your first kiss, your first apartment, your first grown up job and the saying couldn’t be truer about your first foster pet.

I will never forget March 2, 2013; it was the first day we met sweet Melissa out at Labs & Friend’s Camp Schultz boarding facility. I had already fallen in love with her from her pictures, but meeting her in person sealed the deal. She was going to be my first foster dog and I was elated.

Melissa is a black lab mix, around 45lbs with a sweet demeanor. She had been in boarding for six months after being found wandering in Apple Valley. ... Read More

The most common feedback I hear from folks stopping by to talk to Furry Foster about fostering is “I could never foster, I don’t think I could give the pet up”. It’s true, it’s really emotional and challenging to see your foster pet get adopted and ‘leave you’ but the thing you have to keep in perspective is – you saved a life.

It's been almost one year from the day Lynn & Terry Lunceford met Furry Foster at Petco 5k9 in January 2013. Since then, they have rescued an astonishing 21 (soon to be 22) dogs by volunteering as foster parents. Without their compassion, selflessness and love, these dogs may never have been adopted, or worse, may never have gotten the chance to be adopted at all!

For the Luncefords, fostering wasn't a new concept. They successfully fostered for another local organization already and sent one dog, tail wagging, to his forever home. After fostering the first time, they were hooked! ... Read More

Foster Dog Syrah Finds Her “Forever Foster”

says Jessica.

She made the decision to foster first since she wasn’t financially ready to adopt a pet. Through Furry Foster and Almost Home Animal Rescue she was matched with Syrah, a one year-old maltipoo mix.

Jessica took the time to train Syrah and help her open up in a new environment. Syrah was quiet and playful. She was able to meet and greet all of Jessica’s human and furry friends, learn her habits (like sleeping in late on the weekends) and soon became the perfect companion.

“The first couple days [Syrah] was just getting adjusted and her real personality came out later on. Even as her real personality came out she was like the dog I always wanted if I could have a dog. She got along with every dog and every person … she would just love everyone and wanted to be loved so much.”

After several weeks of fostering, Jessica got a new job and felt it was the right time to adopt a dog of her own. That’s when Syrah became her Forever Foster.

Syrah's Foster Mom advises other potential adopters, “If you have concerns that a dog isn’t going to fit into your family, you have an opportunity to get to know the dog and see if they do or not.”

Jessica and Syrah are now a happy permanent family and, although Jessica’s concentrating on Syrah for now, she plans to foster again in the future.
